Lock Picking Tools Types and What Each Lock Picking Tools Does

A set can contain some variations, but each tool has a unique purpose. While some of these Lockpicking Tools can be used outside of lockpicking, they are designed specifically for this purpose. At the very least, you'll encounter tension wrenches and picks.
 
Tension wrench interpretation
The most common tool used in a lock picking device is a tension wrench, which is used to apply torque to the lock. The tension wrench is inserted into the lock and used to hold the plug in place when inserting the pick.
Some tension wrenches are designed to fit specific locks, while others are more generic.
Some of the most common types of tension wrenches include:
Straight tension wrench - The most basic type, a straight tension wrench is a simple L-shaped piece of metal. It is inserted into the bottom of the keyway and is used to apply torque to the plug.
Offset tension wrench - The offset version is similar to a straight wrench, but the L shape is slightly offset. This offset allows for more precision when torque is applied to the plug.
Torque wrench - A torque wrench is similar to a straight wrench, but the handle has a torque. This allows more torque to be applied to the plug.
Double-sided Tension wrench - This aptly named tool has functions on each side of the handle.
 
Pick and rake explained
The next most commonly used tool is the pick, including the hook/rake, to operate all the latches in the lock. There are many varieties, each built to solve a unique challenge.
Small hooks - Small hooks are designed to lift pins one at a time.
Large hook - Same concept as small hook, but with a larger range, perfect for larger pin locks.
Single-ball - Ball picks are used for locks with discs or discs that move regardless of their orientation.
Double ball - same concept as single ball - grab this tool when single ball doesn't work
Small half diamond - Small half diamond picks are used to pick up needles that do not change much. If you have a lot of length, stick with the hook!
 
Rake
Rakes are pickaxes -- they're mainly used to pick locks faster. In the figure above, it's second from the left. Obviously there are no guarantees, but we use these when we need to move quickly or just find the lock too difficult.
Serpentine (C rake) - Rakes are the best hooks when you want to get multiple needles on a line. They produce even motion and can be shaken or picked up under a lot of tension, allowing them to create some resistance so your bait doesn't fly away!
Snake (W rake) - Same idea as C rake, but with more jagged edges applied.
